Adventures We Can't Wait to Take!!

Nov 09, 2011

Adventures We Can’t Wait to Take!  Pets are part of the family and most families prefer to travel together.  If you are like most pet owners, you want to take your furry family member with you everywhere.  The good news is that more and more pets are being welcomed into tourist spots all over the country.  At Adventure4Pets we will help you identify some of the best destinations and pet friendliest cities for your next pet-cation. Carmel, California (Carmel by the Sea) is quickly becoming one of the most pet friendly cities and Top Pet Destinations around.  They feature inns, bed and breakfasts, hotels, restaurants, dog bakeries, spas, specialty boutiques and shops that cater to all members of the family, pets included.  Some shops even welcome pets with water dishes and biscuits.  Many restaurants offer pet menus and private pet areas.  They also have an inn that offers doggie cocktail hour daily. In the center of Carmel Plaza you will find the "Fountain of Woof", a dogs-only drinking fountain.  Many shops allow pets to enter and some have pet posts outside where you can tether your dog.  Not only is Carmel a great city for walking pets, but it is also home to an amazing stretch of off-leash dog beach. Carmel is so pet friendly, in fact, artist Gerrica Connolly of Carmel had the idea to create canine sculptures called “companion pieces” and have them painted by local artists for the annual Carmel art festival.  Carmel is definitely a tourist spot that has pet-friendly and must visit written all over it! Huntington Beach, California is home to one of the original dog beaches and to the very first dog surf competition in the country.  The dog beach stretches over eight miles and allows dogs to get some off-leash exploration and exercise.  Huntington Beach offers a variety of pet friendly options including pet spas, self-serve dog washes, hotels and restaurants.   Hotels in the area, such as The Hilton Waterfront offer the “It’s a Wonderful Dog’s Life” package which includes a doggy bed, toys and bowls for use throughout the duration of your stay.  Also included at The Hilton are a complementary 20-minute dog walk and matching dog beach sweatshirts for you and your pet. When in Seattle, Washington, you may ask yourself, “Who doesn’t own a pet in this city?”  In Seattle, pets are permitted on public buses and trains.  There are many cultural spots to visit while there, including Washington Park Arboretum, Pike’s Place Market, Lake Washington and Olympic Sculpture Park.  Plus, an Ice Cream Cruise where your best friend can come along too! Hop on the tram and head from downtown to the famous Seattle Space Needle, children's or science museums.  The outdoor shopping is great and most stores are pet friendly, offering water bowls and biscuits.  Whether you are interested in taking a mild stroll or an adventurous hike, you can head to Flaming Geyser State Park and see methane geysers or take a walk along the Seaward Park.  The Seattle area is so pet-friendly that Skyhoundz, who has dubbed themselves “the center of the disc dog universe” holds their annual championship there.   These examples are definite reasons why Seattle is another must visit destination. Adventures are for the whole family, pets included, so hopefully you will consider one of these fun and pet friendly destinations for your next Pet-cation! view

San Diego: A Must for your next Pet-cation! (see our Webisode)

Nov 09, 2011

San Diego:  A Must for your next Pet-cation!  San Diego offers tourists over 70 miles of pristine beaches. It is the southernmost tip of California and borders Mexico.  From their beaches to mountains, parks, history, culture and attractions, San Diego is an adventurous area waiting to be explored.  As a result, San Diego is one of the most Pet Friendly cities in the U.S. and a MUST DO for any Pet-cation! (see our Webisode) San Diego has three off-leash dog friendly beaches, as well as, a whole island of poochie paradise, including shops, restaurants, hotels and even places to get a PETIcure (or Brazilian for your dog).  For the sporty pooch, in June there is a yearly surf contest at Lowes Coronado Beach.  Dogs can enter after taking a few lessons.  Coronado Beach is so beautiful that even on an overcast day when the weather is not perfect you can still take a lazy day stroll in the center of town where they have fantastic out- door shops and restaurants.  San Diego is also home to the annual Food & Water Bowl Cat Show. During our Pet-cation, we traveled to the famous dog beach, the Dog Beach dog wash(a do it your self dog wash-the first in San Diego). We went to the Original Paw Pleasers and Pet-I-cures by  Tess a Paw Spa. Benz got a PETIcure & T-touch massage which he really enjoyed, he got his nails painted. Oh and get this Tess does BRIZILIANS FOR YOUR POOCH! (Yes I said Brazilians-ladies we know this OUCH!) In honor of our travels to San Diego, Benz and I decided to learn how to make home- made dog treats. We wanted to impress the ladies at The Original Paw Pleasers and Spirit the dog of course, so we took to the kitchen to attempt the dog treat recipe.  First, we had to find cute cookie cutters (obvi.) then we had to gather the ingredients. The biscuits turned out great and even picky Benz liked them (I tasted them too, hehe!).  I have to say however, heading to The Original Paw Pleasers is the way to go, especially since in my house my fiancé describes my cooking as "lucky I didn't burn the house down!" I love this place because they have doggy birthday cakes, fun/tasty doggy snacks and WOW, they also cater! We had a snack at The Daily Scoop, and grabbed dinner at two different out-door dining restaurants that offer YAPPY HOUR.  Yappy Hour is an hour where pet parents can bring their pups for socialization, take advantage of some great food/drink specials and of course, enjoy some delicious doggie treats. We visited Balboa Park which is quintessential San Diego.  At the Park we enjoyed listening to a saxophone player while we took in the beauty of the gardens and architecture.  Benz wanted to play with the puppies and the great thing about Balboa Park is that it offers three off leash dog parks.  While there, we met up with Dawn, the owner of Leash Your Fitness.  They offer boot camps where owners can bring their pets and take part in a series of exercises and obedience training.  We found Leash Your Fitness to be fun and unique.  They offer mid-season kayaking, hiking to fiesta Island, summer camping getaways and even yoga with your pets. We settled in for the night at Lowes Coronado Beach Hotel, where we discovered just how much they love pets.  Hence the name of their pet friendly program “Lowes Loves Pets”.  Upon arrival at Lowes we saw about five dogs checking in with their families, and not just small dogs, big dogs were welcomed too. And after waking up and ordering room service off the dog room service menu, we took a surfing lesson with Jessis Dog-on surfing school! (Yes DOG SURFING-Benz can now hang 10) San Diego is so amazing!  Benz and I had a great Pet-Cation and can't wait to go back! view

The Difference between PET FRIENDLY and also PET ACCEPTING!!!

Nov 09, 2011

While on your adventures with your best furry friends you want to make the experience enjoyable, easy, and also convenient.  You wouldn't want to go to a hotel that didn't provide you with a bathroom, why would you stay somewhere that doesn't properly accommodate all members of your family.   There are hotels now that not only accommodate all members of your family, pets included but make them feel welcomed.  Upon arrival some hotels will offer treats, they will provide you with a map of the areas for pet relief, and they can even provide special pet beds, bowls and toys! Even better, many hotels offer this for a little cleaning fee or NO FEE AT ALL! Some hotels even offer their own pet program! When you go to a resort with your family don't you want  to make sure that they have a game room for the kids, a play area, and possibly even baby sitting services? Its great to have kisses all day from your pets but sometimes you may want to take a n night out and get kisses from your partner! Well now hotels are catering to your furry kids too--allowing you to travel with the freedom of bringing your entire family, and even hooking up pet-sitters!    Many hotels/motels/ bed & breakfasts/ inns will state that they are pet friendly, it seems to be the "cool new trend" but upon arrival you will notice that not only are they not super pet friendly, some hotels don't even know where good places for pet relief are! YIKES!    When traveling and in a bind its nice to know where to go for a PET ACCEPTING hotel, but when on adventure check the policy of the places you rest your paws, and you'll discover the difference! Your Adventure should be fun, stress free and accommodating for all members of your family,  plan your PET-Cation around places that truly are PET FRIENDLY! :) view

Say Yes to the PETS!

Sometimes my pup gives me the cute puppy look to get what he wants, if its food, if its a toy, to go out.....whatever. Wait! It doesn't happen some of the time, it happens ALL of the time!  In recent studies, it was found that animals who are allowed the freedom to do what they want, when they want, actually make for happier dogs; which could potentially impact their lifespan in the long run.  Many pet owners rely on the negative feedback method to instruct their pets in behavior, however this harsh method of pet obedience can create an irritable and anxious animal.
